2D Drawing conversion to 3D models & creation of STEP output files

Another of a number of tasks to convert pre-existing 2D manufacturing documentation into 3D models to enable 3D STEP files to be produced.

We are increasingly finding that part manufacturers are either not willing or not able to work to traditional, fully detailed 2D drawings and instead require manufacturing data in the form of a 3D STEP file.

For us the conversion of detailed 2D drawings into 3D files is usually a very straight-forward exercise in 3D modelling to the dimensions provided on the drawing.

As a quality check we find that it is best practice to create a 2D drawing using the 3D model and then dimension it using the dimensioning scheme of the original drawing. This way any discrepancies are very easy to spot.
