View a movie showing first assembly of parts made by Rapid Prototyping

watchman-450This movie captures the moment we fist assembled some parts made by Rapid Prototyping (RP) techniques.

We used SLS to represent the longer part that was designed to be extruded in plastic (rather like plastic conduit), and also to make the end caps which would be made by Plastic Injection Moulding (PIM) in volume.  The smoked cover would be made by PIM in volume and for the purposes of this model it was resin cast from a silicone mould taken from an SLA.  This process enabled us to produce a nice quality cover in a smoky grey material with just the right amount of transparency to enable internal LEDs to be seen through the material.

Unfortunately the movie has no sound.  If it did you would hear a satisfying “click” when the parts snap together.
