Compliance EngineeringDesign for Safety, RoHS,
Electromagnetic & Environmental compliance
Time-To-Market (TTM) demands that design is right prior to
regulatory test, as failure would necessitate a costly design re-spin
& hardware rebuild that may result in loss of competitive
advantage or at worst the market opportunity being missed entirely.
Compliance Engineering is the term we give to ensuring that
the design will meet the stated customer and regulatory requirements
before testing. This is done through working at the very
beginning of the development process to gain an understanding of the
requirements and the intended geographic markets, determining the route
to compliance and then ensuring that the design evolves in such a way
that non-compliance is never a risk. Specifically:
- Gain a firm understanding of the customer requirements and
the intended geographic markets
- Plan a route to compliance, identify notified bodies and
understand their requirements.
- Follow the path to compliance:
- Review of the design architecture & concept
stages: physical design concepts and schematics prior to PCB layout,
critical component selection etc.
- Review of detail design: mechanical details and PCB
layout prior to release for manufacture
- Write test plans and manage prototype confidence
testing against the applicable requirements & standards for
thermal performance, vibration, shock etc.
- Manage the relationship with notified bodies and ensure
that Regulatory
testing is conducted in accordance with their requirements.
